The value of the error mask for the last B1 error. A B1 error mask is one byte resulting from a logical
operation on the previous frame. Errors occurring regularly in the same bit of the byte can indicate a
problem in the sender’s or receiver’s equipment. If errors are occurring on the fiber, the B1bits in error
are more likely to be randomly located in the byte.

The number of M1 bits found to be in error since the counter was last reset. The M1 byte is sent from
the remote receiver of the signal, if that remote receiver has detected a B1 error. In that case, the B1
error mask is copied and sent back as the M1 byte.
