Instructions for the installation and

commissioning of Power Xpert

IGX

medium-voltage switchgear

2.2.2.  Purchasable accessories not provided as standard

with Power Xpert IGX switchgear

The following tools and accessories are recommended for

installation and commissioning:

•

Insulating gas leak detector 81A8152H01

2.2.3.  Responsibility of installer

The installer is responsible for preparing, terminating and connecting

all medium voltage power conductors and devices for Power

Xpert IGX switchgear. This includes incoming cables to transition

compartments, main bus conductors between shipping groups

or vertical sections, cable connections to cable connection tank

connectors and surge arresters (if furnished).
The installer is also responsible for inter-group control wiring and

external control wiring connections to incoming signal terminals.
Main bus conductor installation instructions are included in this

document. Instructions for terminating power cables and installing

the connectors into the Power Xpert IGX cable connection tank

inner cone type bushings must be furnished by the vendor whose

connectors the customer has chosen. Cables, once connected, must

be properly braced before any energization. For more information on

Power Xpert IGX cable bracing, contact Eaton Engineering Services.

2.3.  Receiving

2.3.1.  Storage, inspection and unpacking

If a Power Xpert IGX vertical section is not to be used immediately

but is to be placed in storage, maximum protection can be obtained

by keeping it packed as shipped. See

Section 2.6.

The vertical sections should have been shipped in their upright

position, as indicated on the shipping materials.
Open the packaging carefully to avoid any damage to the contents.

Use a nail puller rather than a crow bar when required. When

opening the containers, be careful to save any loose items or

hardware that may be otherwise discarded with the packing

material. Check the contents of each package against the packing

list.
Examine the Power Xpert IGX vertical section or shipping group

for any signs of shipping damage such as broken, missing or loose

hardware, damaged or deformed steel or other broken items. File

claims immediately with the carrier if damage or loss is detected

and notify the nearest Eaton office.

2.3.2.  Sniff test for insulating gas

During the vertical section or shipping group installation process,

use a gas leak detector on each Power Xpert IGX shipping group or

vertical section to detect any leaking insulating gas. Detection of the

gas would require the immediate application of appropriate PPE and

investigation to determine the gas source.
Set the sniffer instrument to 4.4x10

-5

 std. cm

3

/sec. How the

instrument signals the presence of gas will depend on the

instrument. The test Pass/Fail criteria are:

•

Pass: no gas is detected

•

Fail: gas is detected

Pass the sniffer probe close to any accessible Power Xpert IGX

phase pole sealing locations such as

•

cable connection cones

•

gas piping fittings

•

sealing plates

•

mechanism linkage or shaft penetrations

•

gas fill ports (the DN8 valves below the gas gauges) - see

Figure 5

Figure 5.   Gas fill ports.

The insulating gas is heavier than air, so the sniffer should be passed

along the lowest areas of each enclosure near the base plate as an

additional precaution.
Upon uncrating the units, record all gas pressure gauge readings.

Compare those to the pressures during energization.

2.4.  Handling

Power Xpert IGX vertical sections may be arranged in shipping

groups ranging from one to five vertical sections.
Walking on or placing heavy objects on the top of a shipping group

or vertical section should only be done with loads of less than 300

lb.
Depending on the shipping group size, use one of the following to

transport the vertical sections:

•

Crane

•

Fork lift

If using a crane, the rigging should be rated for lifting the Power

Xpert IGX shipping group.
Use a fork lift if Power Xpert IGX shipping groups have been shipped

on pallets. Care must be taken to move the shipping group on its

pallet, with the shipping group fully supported by the fork lift forks.

Partial support of the shipping group may result in tipping over.
Avoid the use of abrupt movements of the shipping groups, to avoid

equipment damage.

2.5.  Rigging

The preferred method of handling all Power Xpert IGX switchgear

assemblies is by crane. Lifting points are provided at the top of each

shipping group. Insert a crane hook through each of the four points

to lift and move the shipping group.

Figure 6

shows example Power

Xpert IGX lifting angles using an overhead crane.
See

Table 3

for the details of recommended lifting chain lengths for

shipping groups of 1 to 3 and 4 to 5 vertical sections.
