3.2.12 Setting Chain Tensions on Conveyors
Dogleg Conveyor
Set tension while conveyor is running. Turn tensioning nut to compress the spring into the cup until either the nut
reaches the cup or the spring is fully compressed. Do not tension beyond full compression of the spring. Tension
other side, and then recheck the first one adjusted. Continue until both springs are at full compression, lock with jam
nuts. Monitor the chain tension by watching the relation of the nut to the cup. As the chain assembly wears, the nut
will move away from cup via the spring. If the chain assembly becomes too loose, it will jump teeth on the sprocket
potentially causing misalignment and chain assembly failure.
Main Front Conveyor w/hydraulic raise extension
Using a tape measure or ruler, set the tensioning shaft the same distance from the end of the conveyor frame on both
sides. Go to the center of the conveyor and lift up on the centermost slat where the front chain is connected. Operator
should be able to comfortably lift the slat off the deck 1”. This should take about 15‑20 lbs of force. Over‑tensioned
chain assemblies may cause chain coupler or shaft failures. Under‑tensioned chain assemblies may become misaligned.
Keep the idler shaft bearings equidistant from the conveyor frame. Should one chain become excessively worn, replace
them both with new chains.
The hydraulic extension conveyor should be tensioned using the same guidelines.
