Canister Replacement. Prior to reuse of the canister, a new single use lid (#TP-DL2800) must be placed onto
the clean canister. The user must verify the white hydrophobic filter is in place on the lid. Canister replacement
procedures by department are presented below.
Surgery, Special Studies, GI Clinic, Labor & Delivery Departments.
Suction canisters shall be replaced after every surgical
procedure.
Med-Surg Floors, ICU’s, Other Non-Procedure Areas.
Suction canisters shall be replaced for every new patient or every
24-hours for the same patient.
Canister Transportation. Used canisters shall be sealed, securely placed in an instrument or DMS Transport
Cart, and transported to the TPSS for immediate processing. Before placing canisters in to the TPSS, verify all of
the ports on the single use lid are capped.
Canister Storage. Used canisters may be stored up to 24 hours in a DMS Transport Cart or other secure location
prior to processing in the TPSS.
