8.1. Glossary and abbreviations
This glossary includes explanations of some of the most important terms and abbreviations that are
used in documentation.
AAF
AAF or Anti Aliasing Filter in short.
Bit
Bit, the basic unit of information storage, a single binary digit that is either 0 or 1.
Baud (Bd)
Baud is synonymous to symbols per second per second. It is the unit of symbol rate, also known as baud
rate or modulation rate; the number of distinct symbol changes.
A baud rate, by definition, means the number of times a signal in a communications channel changes
state or varies.
Example
A 2400 baud rate means that the channel can change states up to 2400 times per second.
This
is often confused with the bit rate (expressed in bit/s), which is related, but may be different. The
number of bits per baud is determined by the modulation technique.
Example
If we use a baud rate of 2400 and a phase modulation (which can transmit four bits per baud),
this means that we can transfer 9600 bit/s. 2400 baud x 4 bits per baud = 9600 bps.
The baud rate (communication speed) between the DS GATE and the measurement modules can be
configured via software.
