4.1 Overview
NOTE
: The SL100/SL240 uses the PCIe bus via an XMC connector, hence the full product
title "SL240 XMC PCIe." The air-cooled and conduction-cooled models have the same
functionality with the exception of the required heat dissipation method. Throughout this
document the product may be referred to by its title in part or in full predicated upon a
relevant context of the subject at hand. Anything that is exclusive to the SL100 XMC PCIe
Cards will be described as such.
The SL240 XMC PCIe-Express is a low cost, highly scalable, point-to-point, serial I/O
interconnect that maintains complete software compatibility with PCI. It transfers data at 1.0 or
2.5 Gbps per lane, per direction, and will scale proportionately for performance by adding lanes
to the link. This card utilizes the P15 and P16 XMC connectors specified in the VITA 42.0
standard for switched data communications to the carrier. The P15 XMC connector provides
power, ground, and auxiliary signals so this card can function without signals from any other
PMC connectors. The P16 XMC connector on the conduction cooled card, supports rear I/O
signals for SFPDP when the optical I/O is not used. In addition to all the above features, the
SL240 XMC is available in a rugged conduction cooled card and, complies with the VITA 42
XMC FRU (Field Replaceable Unit). VITA 42 also requires that Mezzanine Card information be
stored in an on-board memory device, and that a Compatibility Identification table be published.
Both can be seen in Appendix A.
The XMC PCIe basic transmission unit consists of two pairs of conductors, called a “lane.” Each
pair allows for unidirectional data transmission at 1.0 or 2.5 Gbps, so the two pairs combined
provide 2.5 Gbps full duplex communication, without the risk of transmission collision.
Lanes can be concatenated to provide scalable performance; so for example, combining two lanes
will yield 5 Gbps throughput.
The SL240 XMC PCIe is an 8 lane (x8) board with a maximum of 1 Gigabyte per second of
throughput per transmit and receive directions. It incorporates many of the advanced protocol
features in PCI Express such as Automatic Lane Reversal.
The SL240 XMC PCIe can interoperate with Curtiss-Wrights’ existing FibreXtreme family of
products. These products include, PCI Mezzanine PMC, PCI, CMC, PCIe and (SFPDP)
solutions.
The PCI and PMC versions provide this link via the PCI bus. However, The SL240 XMC PCIe
utilizes the XMC PCIe bus for very high serial bandwidth and throughput applications where
parallel-type buses are no longer feasible. The SFPDP versions interface is through a simple
unidirectional parallel port.
