7.0   The Nexus Hand

The Nexus Hand features an integrated medical silicone glove which has been engineered to

collapse and expand to allow the articulation of each digit. It has been designed for maximum

functionality with thick fingertips to prevent wear. The glove provides the surface coat for water

and dust resistance and so the Nexus Hand cannot be used without it. Another glove is not

necessary over the integrated one.
We have designed customisable covers that are bonded to the fingers and a dorsal/palmar

cover that interlocks at each side of the Nexus Hand which prevents the glove from migrating

and provides added protection for the user. They have been injection moulded from a clear

rigid plastic and painted on the inside to prevent discolouration. All covers are available in

four colours.
COVVI developed the digits to be robust by manufacturing them from a combination of stainless

steel and aluminium. The digits are equipped with individual springs that load the fingers and

thumb into passive extension. The Nexus Hand is spring-loaded to protect the design, if the

back of the finger or thumb is struck, the digits will fold forward rather than breaking.

There is no need for external Bluetooth, accelerometers, or RFID triggers with the Nexus Hand

as it has numerous switching options to give users fast access to a multitude of grips. To change

grips or tables the user can assign an open/open, long open hold or co-contraction signal, use

the dorsal button, the FSR sensors in the fingertips and pronate/supinate in dynamic mode.
