Several options still exist for those who can’t create a mix-minus of any
kind on their console. For those with electronic experience, it is possible
to build a mix-minus “nulling” device using the post-fade signal of each
caller fader in your console. Essentially, you can build an analog subtrac-
tion circuit to remove these signals from the main console output.
It’s also sometimes reasonable not to build a mix-minus at all, but rather
to tap the main studio microphone signal before the console and feed it
directly into the STAC

, as in Figure 5. Note that callers will
not be able to hear anything other than the host microphone while
On Air
(no commercials, music, or other audio sources) but this may be suitable
in some circumstances, since the caller will hear the entire program mix
while
On Hold
