OLT is located at the top of EPON system, connecting the uplink aggregation server and downlink
ONU. OLT is the center of EPON system. The data sent from ONU goes through OLT to aggregation
server and the data from server goes thorough OLT to all the ONUs. In the meantime, OLT is in
charge of the management of all the attached ONUs, including monitoring, configuration, upgrade and
alarms.
ONU is located in the bottom of EPON system and closest to the end users. The multi-service access
EPON discussed in this guide can be viewed as the family gateway with PON interface. The link
between server downlink interface and ONU uplink interface is transparent. The data arriving at ONU
PON interface with their own VLAN TAG will find their end interface.
