Performing Elapsed Time and Pulse
Measurements
This section explains operations you can perform during exercise to
keep track of your elapsed exercise time and pulse.
Important!
•
You need to configure personal information (weight, age, etc.) before
using the Pulse Monitor to perform pulse measurements. See
“Configuring Settings”.
•
The Pulse Monitor takes some time to detect your pulse after you start
a measurement operation. During this time, the voice error message
“Check ear clip.” will sound through the earpieces if you press the
PULSE
button. Leave the ear clip attached to your ear and allow the
pulse rate measurement to stabilize. The voice message should
change to a Voice Exercise Advice announcement of your current
pulse level after a short while.
•
You will not be able to perform measurements if the low battery
indicator (
) is on the display. If the battery is low, replace it before
starting the following procedure. An ongoing measurement operation
will stop automatically after about 10 minutes if the low battery
indicator appears.
To use the Pulse Monitor to perform elapsed time and pulse
measurements
1. Hold down the
POWER
button for about two seconds to turn on
power.
•
The display will show all zeros or the result of the last elapsed time
operation you performed.
2. If you want to reset the stopwatch to all zeros and clear all results
currently stored in measurement memory, hold down the
STOP/
RESET/ADJUST
button for about two seconds.
3. Put on the Pulse Monitor and attach the ear clip to your ear.
•
See “To put on the Pulse Monitor for exercise” for more
information.
4. Press the
PULSE
button on the right
earpiece.
•
This starts the stopwatch elapsed time
measurement and pulse monitoring.
•
Elapsed time is measured up to
99 hours, 59 minutes, 59 seconds, in
one-second increments. Elapsed time
and pulse measurement stop when
the elapsed time limit is reached.
•
If you have Voice Exercise Advice
turned on, a simulated human voice
will keep you informed if your current
pulse rate has entered or moved
outside your preset target rate. Voice
Exercise Advice will also announce
the passage of each 10-minute
segment.
•
Even if you have Voice Exercise
Advice turned off, the voice will
announce the first pulse reading
detected.
•
If you press the
PULSE
button at any
time during measurement, the
simulated human voice will announce
your current pulse rate and the
applicable Voice Exercise Advice
message.
5. To stop measurement, press the
STOP/RESET/ADJUST
button.
•
This stops the stopwatch elapsed time measurement and pulse
monitoring, and stores the results in measurement memory. See
“Viewing Measurement Memory Contents” for more information.
6. After you are finished using the Pulse Monitor, hold down the
POWER
button for about two seconds to turn off power.
Auto Stop
The Pulse Monitor will automatically terminate the measurement
operation if it cannot detect a pulse for about five minutes.

Voice Messages
The Pulse Monitor uses a simulated human voice to provide you with
useful information while you are wearing it. There are two types of voice
messages: Voice Exercise Advice and voice error messages.
•
All voice messages are in English only.
Voice Exercise Advice
Voice Exercise Advice uses a simulated human voice to let you know
when certain events occur. Each message is repeated twice.
•
You can turn Voice Exercise Advice on or off. See “Optional Settings”
for more information.
•
In addition to the above, Voice Exercise Advice also announces the
passage of each 10-minute segment. At the end of 10 minutes, for
example, it announces “Ten minutes elapsed.”
•
Pressing the
PULSE
button on the right earpiece causes your current
pulse rate and any applicable Voice Exercise Advice message to be
announced, even if you have Voice Exercise Advice turned off.
Voice Error Messages
Voice error messages let you know when there is some problem with the
Pulse Monitor or its operation. Note that voice error messages always
sound when necessary, and they cannot be turned off.
If you hear this message:
“Above target pulse rate.”
“Target pulse rate
achieved. Good job.”
“Below target pulse rate.”
It means this:
Your current pulse rate is above the upper
limit of the pulse range specified by the
Exercise Mode setting. This message is
repeated every minute.
Your current pulse rate has just entered the
range specified by the Exercise Mode setting.
Your current pulse rate is below the lower limit
of the pulse range specified by the Exercise
Mode setting. This message is repeated
every minute.
If you hear this message:
“Check ear clip.”
“Error”
“Time is up. Reset
Stopwatch.”
“Low battery.”
It means this:
Your pulse cannot be detected for some
reason. This message is repeated every
minute.
Your pulse rate is outside of the supported
measurement range.
The elapsed time measurement of the
stopwatch has reached 99 hours, 59 minutes,
59 seconds.
Battery power is going low. Replace the
battery. This message is repeated every
minute.
