Setup Guide
EIA:
Electronic Industries Association.
EMI:
ElectroMagnetic Interference.
EPOFF:
Early Power OFF. The high priority
interrupt sent to the operating system when the
primary power is lost.
EPOW:
Environmental and POwer Warnings.
EPROM:
Erasable Programmable Read-Only
Memory.
ESD:
Electrostatic Discharge. An undesirable
discharge of static electricity that can damage
equipment and degrade electrical circuitry.
F
FAST-10 WIDE-16:
A standard SCSI interface, 16
bits, providing synchronous transfer rate of up to
10 MHz, with a data transfer speed of 20M bytes
per second.
FAST-20 WIDE-16:
An enhanced standard SCSI
interface, 16 bits, providing synchronous transfer
rate of up to 20 MHz, with a data transfer speed of
40M bytes per second. It is also called ULTRA
WIDE.
FAST-40 WIDE-16:
An enhanced standard SCSI
interface, 16 bits, providing synchronous transfer
rate of up to 40 MHz, with a data transfer speed of
up to 80M bytes per second. It is also called
ULTRA-2/LVD.
FCode:
Firmware Code.
FD3:
The back plane of a disk cage that connects
up to three 1-inch ULTRA-2/LVD. See also disk
cage, disk carrier.
FDDI:
Fiber-optic Distributed Data Interface. A
100-Mbit/sec optical LAN interface. An ANSI
standard for a high-speed, 100-Mbit/sec,
general-purpose network for the interconnection of
computers, networks, and peripheral equipment
using optical fiber cable in a dual-ring configuration.
FEPROM:
Flash Erasable Programmable
Read-Only Memory. An EPROM containing the
system firmware.
FFC:
Failing Function Code. A code representing a
functional area of the system.
firmware:
The microcode in read-only memory
(ROM). It consists of an ordered set of instructions
and data stored in a way that is functionally
independent of main storage.
Forth:
The Open Firmware based language
interpreter.
FPL-B:
See system planar.
FRE:
One-synchronous DIMM riser card. It is used
for memory configurations requiring only one
memory bank. See also riser.
FSB:
It is a card housing the BUMP logic. Also, it
holds two dedicated connectors which interconnect
the FSB card to the KBB card and to the KHS card,
if this is installed.
FSM:
Eight-synchronous DIMM riser card. It is
used for memory configurations requiring more
than one memory bank. See also riser.
FRU:
Field Replaceable Unit.
FW:
See firmware.
G
GUI:
Graphical User Interface.
H
High Availability:
A particular configuration which
shares resources between two base units, so that if
one base unit fails, the other one takes the control
without interrupting any activity.
hot swapping:
The operation of removing a faulty
hard disk drive and replacing it with a good one
without interrupting the system activity.
HVD:
High Voltage Differential.
I
I2C:
Inter Integrated Circuit.
ID:
A number which uniquely identifies a device on
a bus.
IEC:
International Electrotechnical Commission.
IER:
Interrupt Enable Register.
I/O:
Input /Output.
IPI:
Internal Pending Interrupt.
IPL:
Initial Program Load
.
It defines the functional
phases during the system initialization.
ISA:
Industry Standard Architecture (Bus).
J
JBOD:
Just a Bunch Of Disks.
JTAG:
Protocol dedicated to ASICs programming.
