8 ATL automated procedure
The automated ATL procedure operates in a different way to that in the manual procedure. The system is
controlled by auto-prompts shown on the GCP display which the operator must follow.
There are some vehicles which cannot be tested using the automated test procedure; these are 4 wheel drive
vehicles, vehicles with 3 wheels only and vehicles with 3 axles. In these circumstances, the manual test
procedure should be applied.
The automated test is carried out in the following order and the screen shots below indicate the most
common route through the software. The software will operate differently depending on the data entered at
the beginning of the test.
1. Front axle brake test.
2. Front axle brake bind test.
3. Parking brake test
4. Rear axle brake test
5. Rear axle brake bind test.
Firstly the operator must enter the vehicle data into the system such as vehicle make, model, type of braking
system etc. After this has been done, the operator is instructed by prompts on the display to place the front
wheels of the vehicle in the rollers. The software determines when the vehicle is in place before automatic
startup of the rollers.
When testing Class 7 and 5L vehicles,
the DGW (Design Gross Weight) must
be entered here. If there is a weighing
system fitted to the RBT then this will
be disabled.
From this point on, the procedure is
completely automatic and the operator
must follow the on-screen prompts to
carry out the test.
