Intermediate Separators
3.1.4.1
Description
Two intermediate separators are mounted on the compressor, one after the 2nd stage and another after 3rd
stage. These separators are designed to remove oil and water which accumulates due to the cooling of the
air after the compression process. Separation is achieved by means of centrifugal action. In the 2nd stage
separator the design of the filter head provides this action. In the 3rd stage separator the centrifugal action
is provided by a vortex plate additionally a sintered metal filter is provided to remove dirt contamination.
3.1.4.2
Maintenance
Proper operation of the compressor requires that the intermediate separator be properly serviced.
3.1.4.2.1
2nd Stage Intermediate Separator
1. Remove piping connected to the separator.
2. Screw off the knurled nut. (3)
3. Remove separator head (2)
4. Remove the center insert. (5)
5. Use hot soapy water to clean the center insert and the separator housing (1)
6. Check condition of O-rings (4) and replace as necessary.
7. Rinse, dry and reassemble

3. Remove filter head (2) along with the sintered metal filter assembly. (4-7)
4. Remove the center screw (6) and separate the sintered metal filter (7), baffle cone (5), and vortex
plate (4) from the filter head.
5. Use hot soapy water to clean the sintered metal filter assembly (4-7), the center insert (9) and the sep-
arator housing (1)
