SERVICE- 1200 & 1400 AXLES
(continued...)
NOTICE
2. GENERAL REPAIRS
Before beginning repairs, review the following guidelines. These are to provided to
emphasize the need for attention to detail and care when servicing the axle
assembly.
2.1 Inspection Before Disassembly
Inspect the planet pinion carrier, axle shaft, the
pinion shaft and ring gear before removal as
follows:
2.
1.
3.
Wipe the lubricant from the internal working
parts and visually inspect the parts for
excessive wear or damage.
Inspect gears for roughness.
Inspect the pinion gear teeth for signs of
scoring, abnormal wear, or nicks/chips.
2.2 Heating Bearing Cones
Heat bearing cones in bearing heater. Use a
thermometer, DO NOT EXCEED 300°F
(150°C).
2.3 Cleaning & Inspection
Ÿ
Use moisture-free air for drying.
Ÿ
Clean all parts with clean solvent.
Ÿ
Inspect bearing cups for excessive wear.
Ÿ
Inspect thrust washers and thrust surfaces
for distortion, roughness, scoring or wear.
2.4 Bearings
Ÿ
Never dry bearings with compressed air.
Spinning a bearing without lubrication can
damage the bearing.
Ÿ
Clean bearings with clean solvent, dry
thoroughly and oil before inspection. Inspect
bearings for roughness of rotation and
excessive wear of rollers.
Ÿ
Both the bearing cone and roller assembly
should be replaced if either the cup or cone
has excessive wear.
Ÿ
Cups and cones are properly seated
properly if a 0.002” (0.05 mm) feeler gauge
will NOT pass for a 360° circular sweep
between cone or cup mounting surface.
Ÿ
When installing bearings cups and cones,
make sure they are fully seated.
2.4 Bearings (continued...)
Ÿ
Inspect shafts and replace if excessively
worn or damaged.
Ÿ
Inspect the shaft bearing surfaces for wear
or damage.
2.5 Shafts
2.6 Gears & Planetary Assemblies
Ÿ
Examine the gear teeth for excessive wear,
replace if necessary.
Ÿ
The pinion shafts should be inspected for
loose fit and/or complete disengagement.
Ÿ
Check for smooth rotation of gears
Ÿ
Needle bearings and thrust washers should
be lightly coated with petroleum jelly during
assembly.
Ÿ
The differential ring gear and drive shaft are
replaced as a matched set.
2.7 Assembly
Ÿ
Use the specified grease when installing
seals.
Ÿ
During assembly, each part should be
lubricated with clean hydraulic oil.
Ÿ
Install the correct cone point shims.
Ÿ
Perform specified preload, backlash, and
rolling drag torque checks.
