SECTION 7: VENTING
7.1 Chan g in g Vent and Air Intake Orientation
The heater is sold w ith rear horizontal vent and air
intake connections as standard. (Only separated
comb
u stion models have air intake connection). If
vertical vent and air intake connections are req u ired,
follo w the instr u ctions
on Page 42, Section 15.5
.
7.2 Ventin g
This heater m u st be vented in accordance w ith the
r u les contained in this man u al and w ith the follo w ing
national codes and any state, provincial or local
codes
w hich may apply: United States: Refer to
NFPA54/ANSI Z223.1 - latest revision, National F u el
Gas Code; Canada: Refer to CSA B149.1 Nat u ral
Gas and Propane Installation Code.
Any portion of vent pipe passing thro
u gh a
comb u stible w all m u st have a listed thimble to
conform w ith the above codes.
The heater may be installed u nvented in
certain circ u mstances according to b u ilding
ventilation codes. Refer to the above codes
and
Page 13, Section 7.4 for f u rther information.
Unvented operation also req u ires compliance w ith
the clearances to comb u stibles given on Page 6,
Figure 3
.
The bottom of the vent or air intake terminal shall not
be located less than 1' (.3 m) above grade level.
The vent shall not terminate less than 7' (2.1 m)
above grade
w here located adjacent to p u blic
w alk w ays.
V ent terminal m u st be installed at a height s u fficient
to prevent blockage by sno w and b u ilding materials
protected from degradation by fl u e gasses.
V ent terminal m u st be beyond any comb u stible
overhang.
Sec u re all joints w ith corrosion resistant #8 x 3/8"
sheet metal scre w s.
For single w all venting, press u re sensitive al u min u m
tape or silicone sealant m u st be u sed to seal all
joints.
Al u min u m tape shall have a minim u m temperat u re
rating of 400° F (204° C) and meet SMACNA AFTS-
100-73 standards. High temperat
u re silicone sealant
m u st have a minim u m temperat u re rating of 480° F
(250° C).
7.2.1 United States Re q uirements
V ent m u st terminate at least 3' (.9 m) above any
forced air inlet located w ithin 10' (3.1 m).
V ent m u st terminate at least 4' (1.2 m) belo w ,
4' (1.2 m) horizontally from, or 1' (.3 m) above any
door, operable
w indo w , or gravity air inlet into any
b u ilding.
NFPA 54/ANSI Z223.1 - latest revision, National
F
u el Gas Code specifies a 4' (1.2 m) horizontal vent
terminal clearance from gas and electric meters,
reg
u lators and relief eq u ipment.
7.2.2 Canadian Re q uirements
The vent shall not terminate w ithin 6' (1.8 m) of a
mechanical air s u pply inlet to any b u ilding.
The vent shall not terminate w ithin 3' (.9 m) of a
w indo w or door that can be opened in any b u ilding,
any non-mechanical air s u pply inlet to any b u ilding,
or of the comb u stion air inlet of any other appliance.
7.3 Vent Installation
Maintain clearances to comb u stibles at all times for
safety. Clearances are the req u ired distances that
comb u stible objects m u st be a w ay from the heater
to prevent serio u s fire hazard. See Page 6, Section
4 . For vented u nits, the vent m u st terminate o u tside
of the b u ilding.
V ents m u st be f u lly sealed and correctly sized for
the model. If the vent passes thro u gh a w all or
ceiling of comb u stible material, it m u st be enclosed
by a listed thimble and be separated from the
thimble by at least a 2" (5 cm) air gap.
For separated comb u stion models, vents and air
intakes m u st be a f u lly sealed system and correctly
sized for the model. V ent sho u ld be assembled as
detailed on Page 14, Figure 8 through Page 18,
Figure 13 . The joints bet w een the vent terminal and
the roof or w all m u st be properly sealed. If the vent
passes thro u gh a w all or ceiling of comb u stible
material, it m u st be enclosed by a listed thimble and
be separated from the thimble by at least a 2" (5 cm)
air gap.
WARNING
Carbon Monoxide Hazard
Heaters may be installed
vented or unvented.
Vented heaters must be
vented outdoors.
Unvented heaters must be
installed according to the
installation manual.
Failure to follow these
instructions can result in
death or injury.
