Audio Tuning for NENA Devices
Audio volume and quality can be adjusted in many different ways when the Avtec USB NENA Jack Box interfaces with
Scout. These options consist of physical settings and settings on the Avtec USB External Audio Interface webpage.
Physical Settings
l
Jack Box Volume Knob
– The volume knob located on the front of the Avtec USB NENA Jack Box
l
NENA Volume
– The physical volume settings on the NENA device
NOTES
l
Avtec recommends beginning by tuning the
Jack Box Volume Knob
and
Phone Speaker Volume
to
50%.
l
If audio quality is poor after configuring the NENA interface, ensure that audio levels at the physical
RJ45 NENA connector meet NENA specifications.
External Audio Interface Settings
To configure the following fields, access
Devices
>
Peripherals
on the Console Configuration webpage, and then select
the External Audio Interface for the jack box.
l
Windows Input Level (%)
– The level of audio sent from the NENA phone to the Software Media Workstation
console
l
Mic Gain (dB)
– The input level, as a percentage, of the Windows Microphone level that this external audio
interface should use
l
Output Level
– The level at which the Software Media Workstation console outputs audio to the external audio
interface of the jack box (NENA device)
VAGC Settings
Voice Automatic Gain Control (VAGC) settings for Avtec USB peripherals enhance audio clarity for dispatchers.
Introduced in Scout Version 4.13, these settings allow administrators to adjust VAGC target, loss/gain, and threshold
settings to account for elevated background noise, variances in individual dispatcher audio, and other scenarios.
VAGC adjustments to transmit (outbound) audio are made on the
Avtec USB Jack Box
webpage. VAGC adjustments to
receive (inbound) audio are made on the
Avtec USB External Audio Interface
webpage. These VAGC settings include
the following:
l
VAGC
– Determines whether the Voice Automatic Gain Control adjusts the level of voice audio entering the
device from the field.
l
VAGC Low Target (dB)
– Sets the VAGC Low target for this device. When the input signal exceeds the
VAGC Threshold, the VAGC alters the receive audio so that it remains between the VAGC Low Target and VAGC
High Target.
