Synchronization
6.2
In case of vessels with several engines it is often requested to control all engines with exactly the same rpm.
Furthermore, it is desirable that for adjustment of the rpm of all engines only one lever has to be adjusted. The lever
which gives the set speed for all engines is called master of the synchronization, the remaining levers therefore represent
the slaves of synchronization.
Activation of synchronization
The special function synchronization can only be activated in the cruising state ahead. In addition, the levers of all
propulsion systems at the active control station must be in approximately the same position. A deviation of +/- 10 % is
admissible. If the preconditions are fulfilled, the special function synchronization can be activated by shortly pressing the
button SYN./TROL at the control head. The lamp SYNCHRO at the control head type 240/241/244/251 is lighted when
synchronization has been activated.
With active synchronization the master control head gives the set speed for all propulsion systems. The master of
synchronization is indicated by the active lamp COMMAND. At the slaves of synchronization the lamp COMMAND is off.
In case of control stations with control head type 230 and corresponding operating modules the master of
synchronization can be selected by operating the button SYN./TROL. exactly at that operating module which shall serve
as master system later. In case of control stations with control head type 240/241/244/251 a selection of the master is
not possible. Depending on the customer's requirement the starboard or portside system is always the master for
synchronization. This is to be defined during the commissioning.
During the commissioning of the system one of the three operating modes described below is preset on customer's
request:
Cruising with synchronization
window operation
When adjusting the nominal value for speed the lever of the master as well as the levers of the slaves of synchronization
must be moved in a window of 10 % to each other so that the same speed is adjusted on all engines. If the levers are
moved beyond this window, the synchronization changes to standby mode.
In standby mode the engine speed is set by the respective lever of the propulsion system again, the synchronization is
no longer active. Only when the levers are within the 10-% window again, the control changes from standby mode to
active mode, then the engine speed is only preset by the master again. The lamp SYNCHRO at the control station
flashes to indicate standby mode, the lamp COMMAND is active for all propulsion systems at the active control station
again.
If the control head type 230 is equipped with a lever follow-up system, this will take over the adjustment of the levers of
the slave system.
Cruising with synchronization
one-lever operation mode 1
If with synchronization the engine speed shall be set only by one lever, the control must be brought into active mode first
(see above). Now the lever of the slave system can be moved quickly to the detent ahead without leaving the active
mode. Subsequently, the lever of the master system can set the nominal value for speed of all engines over the entire
range ahead without adjusting the levers of the slave system.
If the lever is moved hesitantly to the detent ahead, however, the control will shift to standby mode and a one-lever
operation will be impossible. The procedure must be repeated then.
Cruising with synchronization
one-lever operation mode 2
In one-lever operation mode 2 the nominal value for the speed will be affect by the lever of the master system as well as
the direction of the gear. To activate this mode 2 the control system must be put first in the active mode (see above).
Afterwards, the position of the lever of the slave system is no longer relevant. Now all propulsions can be controlled by
one lever in a parallel way over the entire range of the lever.
