18. Water separator and fuel filter
The fuel lines run first through a pre-filter, and then
through a combined fuel filter with a water separator
unit at the bottom of the filter. In difficult operating
environment the fuel filter must be changed more
frequently than the recommended maintenance interval.
The water separator is intended to remove small
amounts of water that may have been introduced in the
fuel tank via condensation. If the the warning light
in the dashboard is lit, the water separator must be
checked and drained. The water separator can be
drained by opening a valve on the bottom of it.
After replacing the filters, or running out of fuel, prime
the fuel system. Press the manual pump on the filter
repeatedly, until it becomes stiff.
Care must be taken when replacing the fuel filters.
Make sure to keep all parts clean during service.
If the water separator is not drained, fuel contains
excessive quantities of water, or the water
separator is damaged, severe damage to the
injection pump and electronic injectors may result.
