WELDING OF PAINTED METAL
Welding will always create air pollution, e.g. carbon monoxide that is
hazardous to health.
When welding a painted surface organic disintegration products will be
formed from the paint adhesives and non-organic compounds from the
pigments.
It is very important to arrange sufficient ventilation on the welding site.
When welding a zinc coating, zinc fumes will form which might cause
zinc fever.
Symptoms of zinc fever:
High body temperature (even over 40 Cº), tiredness, pain in joints,
nausea and headache. Symptoms generally appear a couple of hours
after exposure. Zinc fever generally passes quickly and it does not
cause permanent injury. The fever is evidence of insufficient ventilation.
Before welding a material with paint film thickness of more than 100 µm,
remove the paint from an area of width 10-15 cm.
