10.4 Operating the Windrower
When ready for field use be sure to remove the drum transport pin. After completing field work always prepare
machine for road transport be reinstalling the transport pins. Refer to “Leveling the Windrower” in the
‘AssemblySection’ for location of drum transport pin hole.
Then set the working depth of the windrower teeth to desired level. Do this by screwing the depth stop collar on the
drum of the hydraulic cylinder in or out.
10.3 PTO RPM and Ground Speed
Ground speed is achieved by transmission gear selection and not by the engine operating speed. The operator
may be required to experiment with several gear range combinations to determine the best gear and range which
provides the most ideal performance from the windrower and most efficient tractor operation. As the severity of
windrowing conditions increase, the ground speed should be decreased by selecting a lower gear to maintain the
proper operating PTO speed.
Ground speed for windrower will depend upon the size of the rocks being windrowed. Recommended speed for
efficient windrower performance is 5 mph. Operate the implement at its full rated PTO speed to maintain speed for
windrower operation. Refer to the tractor operator’s manual or the tractor instrument panel for the engine speed
and gear to provide the required PTO and desired ground speed. Make sure that the windrower is operating at its
full rated speed before entering the field to be windrowed. If it becomes necessary to temporarily regulate engine
speed, increase or decrease the throttle gradually.
WARNING!
Do not exceed the rated PTO speed for the Implement. Excessive PTO speeds can cause
Implement driveline or blade failures resulting in serious injury or death.
(SG-26)
I
n order to protect the driveline against excessive shock loads a shear bolt is provided on the universal joint
assembly between the gearbox and chain case. Should the shear bolt break during operation replace as outlined
in the ‘Maintenance’ section of this manual.
IMPORTANT:
Fully raise the drum off the ground BEFORE engaging the PTO. Failure to do so could result in
shear bolt breakage.
Do not exceed 5 mph (8 km/h) while operating the windrower. In heavy rock conditions reducing your forward
speed will ensure that rocks are not skipped.
If too much dirt is being carried into the windrow, reduce the working depth. The axle plates can also be adjusted
up or down to bias the working depth to one side or the other. Typically the axle of the right leg on the pivoting
wheel standard is set 1" lower then the left leg. This is to help bring material to the surface.
If large rocks are being carried into the windrow, slow the tractor rpm.
