Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) can damage electronic modules. When handling modules, wear
an antistatic discharge wrist strap to prevent damage to electronic components. Place
modules in antistatic packing material when transporting or storing. When working on
modules, always place them on an approved antistatic mat that is electrically grounded.
After unpacking the GPON 452/454 inspect it for damage. Before planning the installation of
the GPON 452/454, the technician should do the following to verify component integrity.
1. Unpack both the GPON 452/454 and power supply (packed separately) to ensure the
units are visibly intact and are not missing any components.
2. Examine the GPON 452/454 enclosure, fiber management guide, associated terminals,
weather resistant grommets, fiber connector, telephone and Ethernet ports for usability.
3. Examine the power supply to ensure that the UPS, battery and power cord are present
and sound.
If damage has occurred, file a claim with the carrier then contact ADTRAN Customer Service.

on page 55 for further information. If possible,
keep the original shipping container for returning the GPON 452/454 for repair or for
verification of shipping damage.

5.2 Required Tools
Standard technician tools are used for an GPON 452/454 installation (for example, drill, drill
bits, side cutters, screwdrivers, nut drivers, hex wrenches, wire strippers, etc.).
Specifically, the following tools are required for the installation of the GPON 452/454:
■ Carpenter’s level
■ 3/32” screw driver
■ 5/32” hex tamper-proof bit
■ 216-Type can wrench
■ Fiber splicing tools
■ RJ-45 connector crimper
■ RJ-45 plug (two for the 452, four for the 454)
