Appendix B: Monitor connections
Connecting a colour TV with a coaxial aerial cable
You can connect an ordinary colour TV using the coaxial aerial cable. As well as the
PAL colour video signal a mono sound channel is provided, so that the TV's
loudspeaker can be used.
If your TV has a SCART connector, or a 9- or I 5-way D-type connector, it's best if you
use that; you'll get a better picture (and stereo sound, in the case of some SCART TVs).
See the cable descriptions earlier in this chapter, but check with your supplier that the
SCART TV you've got uses the same signals described.
This section explains how to connect a TV that only has a standard coaxial aerial
input.
1. Plug one end of the TV aerial cable into the TV, and the other end into the
UHF modulator socket on the back of the computer.
2. Connect the TV to the power outlet on the wall and switch it on (switch the
computer on now as well, if it isn't on already).
3. Tune the TV to channel 36 (591.25MHz).
The manual supplied with your TV will tell you how to re-tune. Some TVs
have a tuning facility on their remote control panel, others have tuning
knobs behind a panel on the front or rear of the TV.
When you're tuned to the correct channel, you'll see the RISC OS desktop
on the screen:
Channel 36 is used by some VCRs so you might find it convenient to use the VCR
setting on your TV
4. If the picture doesn't look very good, try fine-tuning the TV (note that you might
need to read through part I of this guide before you understand all the
following terms and techniques):
•
Insert the Applications disc into the floppy disc drive and click on
the floppy drive icon.
