Switching off the computer
T
his chapter describes the correct procedure to follow before switching off your
computer (do this at night, or if you're not intending to use the computer for a few
days).
Normal shutdown procedure
When you've been doing some work on the computer and want to switch it off, you can
simply switch off using the ON/OFF switch on the back of the computer. However,
you'll lose any unsaved work this way.
By following the instructions in this chapter, you can switch off the computer more '
gracefully'. This will ensure that you don't lose any work, and that the computer is in a
safe state before you turn off at the switch.
1 Save your work
Make sure that you save any work you have been
doing, or you might lose it (see Files and
directories on page 43).
2 Shut the computer down
Move the pointer over the Task manager icon
and click Menu.
Choose Shutdown from the menu.
The computer checks to see whether you have left
any work unsaved. If you have, a window will
appear, asking you if you really want to quit the
relevant application.
If you're sure you want to quit, click on Discard (
to discard any changes). If you want to save your
work before you switch off, click on Cancel, save
the work, then choose Shutdown again.
