Audio files can be recorded on internal or external HDD or
both simultaneously. If
Int+Ext.HDD
is selected, recording at
24bit 96kHz is limited to six tracks.
When listening to recorded files, only the internal drive
plays. To listen to files on the external drive, switch to 'Ext.
HDD' and don't forget to switch back afterward.
note:
the message panel displays the lowest remaining disk
space in Mega Bytes.
FAQ:
I select SESSION.03 'Int+Ext.HDD', I connect an
external HDD and wait for its activity LED to turn green, but
it doesn't.
Wait for the 'three-platter' icon to stop blinking
in the middle circular screen, then go to 'Int+Ext.HDD'. If
Cantar still doesn't see the disk, most probably it is not
FAT32 'One Primary Partition' formatted. (see below).
04 Disk Format
HDD/SSD/CF DVD-RAM
Almost identical operations for hard drives and DVD-RAM
optical medias.
HDD/SSD/CF formatting
Cantar HDD/SSD/CF do not use a proprietary format, they
are FAT32 'One Primary Partition' formatted, directly acces-
sible by both Mac and PC.
Internal
Open the disk compartment and unscrew the disk
carrying shuttle. Following the instructions below, connect it
to Cantar through a FireWire cable as an external device.
This is protection from accidental erasure by idle fingers.
External
FireWire connected, Cantar formats it up to
127GB which is Microsoft's commercial limit for FAT32. To
format a larger disk, see
Tutorial 1, Disks
(p.43).
Instructions
(please read completely before proceeding)
1
With no external 'Device' plugged-in, go to SESSION.04
'Disk Format', [ok], '
Shift+Gold
' is displayed.
2
Press and hold the [shift] [gold] buttons while connecting
the external 'Device' to Cantar; continue to press them until
'
Formatting
' is displayed on the rectangular screen, then
release both.
To avoid mishaps, plug the FireWire cable into the rear
socket while Cantar is not powered; hold it with the retain-
ing screw (p.5). Later –
while the [shift] [gold] buttons are
pressed –,
connect the other end of the cable to the 'Device'
(for CF cards, see note2).
3
'
Done
' is displayed when formatting is finished. A 'three-
platter' icon appears on the middle circular screen. Go to
STOP.
note1:
most HDDs are consumer products and their life
span ranges from one to three years. Formatting a disk
doesn't protect you from dead clusters. Regularly
scan
your
drives, see below SESSION.05 'Scan HDD'. Even if there is
only
one
defective cluster,
immediately discard the drive
.
note2:
you can leave the CF card converter permanently
connected and introduce the card while the [shift] [gold]
buttons are pressed.
