EN
As the types of application of a flexible anchor line may vary, it is impossible to make a generally valid statement on the r equired free
space.
In drop tests according to EN 353-2 (vertical dropping of 100 kg weight), the tape fall absorber can extend by 60 cm and the guided type
fall arrester can slide down on the rope up to 10 cm.
Lanyard length on the flexible anchor line EDGER 6/12 and 8/13 (tape fall ab karabiner) = 34 cm.
Calculation example:
Lanyard length multiplied by 2
= 68 cm
Extension of the tape fall absorber
= 60 cm
Eventual sliding of the guided type fall arrester HERKULES
= 10 cm
Resulting in a fall height of
= 138 cm
+ the user’s body size (e.g.: 180cm)
= 180 cm
+ free safety space
= 100 cm
Resulting in a required free space below the crash site of at least
= 418 cm rounded 4.20 m
Please refer also to 6.2 Instructions for use
– EN353-2!
The below examples should help to further explain and calculate the required free space. These examples show
the calculation of the required free space based on a lanyard, which is designed as fall arrest system according to
EN 363.
It is essential for safety reasons to choose the position of the anchor device (anchor point) in a way that the fall distance is limited to a
minimum. Only full body harness according to EN361 may be used with a fall arrest system. Maximum total lanyard length 2.0m including
fittings, karabiners and tape fall absorbers.
The required free space below a crash site has to be calculated before starting work.
Attention:
A slack lanyard also increases the fall height. The lower the chosen anchor point the more free space must be calculated
below a crash site.
Example 1 - figure 5.1-F1:
Functional requirements:
Anchor device / anchor point above the head. Fall distance 2m. Lanyard as short as possible - tensioned /
vertically upwards. The required free space must be measured from the standing site level to the closest possible impact level (e.g.: floor,
machine parts, platform,
etc. …).
Lanyard (

= 0.0 m
Length changes of the tape fall absorber
(4)
= 0.5 m
Displacement of the full body harness on the body
(5)
= 0.5 m
Free safety space
= 1,0 m
Required free space below the crash site
= 2,0 m
Example 2 - figure 5.2-F2:
Functional requirements:
Anchor device / anchor point in the chest area. Fall distance 5m. Lanyard as short as possible - total maximum
length 2 m. The required free space must be measured from the standing site level to the closest possible impact level (e.g.: floor,
machine parts, platform, etc. …).
Lanyard (

= 2.0 m
Length changes of the tape fall absorber
(4)
= 1.0 m
Displacement of the full body harness on the body
(5)
= 0.5 m
Free safety space
= 1,0 m
Required free space below the crash site
= 4.5 m
Example 3 - figure 5.3-F3:
Functional requirements:
Anchor device / anchor point in the standing site level area. Fall distance 7m. Lanyard as short as possible -
total maximum length 2 m. The required free space must be measured from the standing site level to the closest possible impact level
(e.g.: floor, machine parts, platform, etc. …).
Lanyard (
