Canopy Attachment
The canopy hatch for your Yak mounts by inserting the wood dowels into the front bulkhead and securing
the rear of the canopy hatch using a pair of thumbscrews. The canopy hatch is held onto the fuselage
with 3mm nylon thumbscrews. These thumbscrews require no tools to install or remove and are very
convenient – but because they are plastic they will not last forever. Inspect them frequently – spares are
included in your kit.
You can also use socket head cap screws with neoprene backed washers if you like. It has been our
experience that metal canopy screws will vibrate loose and fall out in flight if you do not use rubber-
backed washers, especially on gasoline powered aircraft.
The canopy hatch is supplied with the floor pre-installed. The rear of the hatch is left open so you can do
any necessary work inside the cockpit area. When you have completed any work inside the cockpit, use
CA glue to install the balsa rear plate onto the canopy hatch.
We recommend using CA first to harden, and then epoxy to strengthen, the front canopy hatch mounting
dowel pins. These pins take high stresses and abuse from vibration. Inspect them frequently.
Radio Installation Notes
We have provided locations for two full-size switches or servo-plug sized charge jacks on each side of the
fuselage, as well as a 6mm hole for a Smart-Fly flag-style safety switch if desired. We also mount our
fuel filler or fuel dot in this area, as shown. Our soft-switch is mounted on the right side of the airframe
and ports to check or charge the RX battery packs are mounted on the left side in the cutouts provided.
Below are some photos of the installation of the radio gear for a gasoline power system using a DA60 and
an ignition battery elimination regulator/switch. For our DA60 installation using an IBEC, we have found
that a reasonable CG for this airframe can be achieved using 2200mah dual receiver packs mounted on
the motor box sides as shown. Some pilots that prefer a more rearward CG are also pleased with the
battery packs mounted just behind the receiver on the radio tray. We recommend starting with a slight
nose-heavy CG and working your way toward a rearward CG over the course of several test flights.
