IP Address Overview

IP

address is network layer address in the IP protocol stack. One

IP address is composed of two parts:

�

Network bit identifying the network to which this IP address
belongs.

�

Host bit identifying a certain host in the network.

Address

Classification

IP addresses are divided into five classes: A, B, C, D and E. Front
three classes are commonly used. Addresses of class D are net-
work multicast addresses and addresses of class E are reserved
classes. Range of each class is shown in

Table 5
