3 Product and Functional Description of Focal CC
The Focal CC consists of a valved supply line and feedthrough on a defined chamber port and a
precision attachment to the ultramicrotome inside the specimen chamber. The nozzle is fixed to
the stage. If the stage translates to move the specimen position, the nozzle moves also. The speci-
men therefore remains at a fixed distance from the nozzle once the adjustment is complete and
the chamber door is closed.
3.1 Focal CC Feedthrough
Purpose
The Focal CC feedthrough supplies a controlled flow of gaseous nitrogen to the specimen cham-
ber of the microscope whilst at high vacuum.
Position
The Focal CC feedthrough is either located on a rear or side port, depending on the microscope
type.

Function

3.2 Focal CC Ultramicrotome Attachment
Purpose
When a non-conducting specimen is exposed to the primary electron beam, charging effects on
the specimen surface inhibit clear and stable imaging. The Focal CC reduces the charging effect by
injecting a gentle local flow of gaseous nitrogen directly onto the area of interest.
Position
The Focal CC mechanism is mounted on the ultramicrotome, inside the specimen chamber of the
microscope. Once installed, it normally remains attached to the ultramictrome even when the ul-
tramictrome is removed from the specimen chamber.
