INTERNAL CONTROL ERROR
If using a Wayne control, check the diagnostic LED for an error code. Consult the table below to
troubleshoot the issue.
Disconnect flame sensor lead from primary control.
Connect (+) positive lead (dc) microampere meter to
the primary control terminal. Connect the (-) negative
microampere meter lead to the flame sensor lead
terminal. Check polarity of L1 and L2. L1 to ground,
120 volts. L2 to ground 0 volts. See Figure 20: Flame
current measurement.
Reset control, after pre-purge cycle, flame is
established. A stable microampere current of .
0.2 (0.8 for Honeywell controls) or more is
required for dependable operation.
Flame sensor microampere reading is too weak
or unstable.
Probable causes of erratic lockout
1. Flame proving circuit grounded by
moisture.
2. Damaged insulation on flame sensor
lead.
3. Flame sensor improperly positioned
in flame (see Figure 21).
4. Poor ground path to primary control.
5. Defective primary control.
6.
Read manual section “Flame
Sensing”.
7. Deposits on flame sensor. Refer to
Troubleshooting Guide Section.
8. Insure ground rod at end of air tube
is in place.
9. Applicable only to Honeywell S89
series primary ignition controls:
Connect L1 to the black lead and L2
to the white lead exiting the S89
otherwise the S89 will not detect the
flame and will lock out.
Probable causes:
1. Extremely poor combustion level.
2. Flame sensor improperly positioned
in flame.
3. Defective primary control.
Reset Control
Completes 30 second pre-purge cycle.
Flame is established.
Sometimes the control locks out before thermostat or controlling circuit is satisfied
