DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
The TDA-603 Universal Touch Dimmer is designed to replace a standard light switch or dimmer. It controls a variety
of load types including: incandescent, quartz halogen, dimmable magnetic or electronic low voltage transformers,
dimmable cold cathode neon ballasts, dimmable two wire fluorescent (Advance Mark X or equivalent) and compact
fluorescent ballasts.
The Touch Dimmer operates in the following way:
The load status LED located on the top of the paddle acts as a locator light. When the connected load is off, the load
status LED will be on at a dim level. When the connected load is turned on, the LED will increase in brightness. The
seven light level LEDs on the side of the dimmer show the current light level of the product. As the user presses and
holds the paddle the light level LEDs will act as a bar graph indicating the current light level. For example when the
connected load is on at 50% brightness, the four lower LEDs will be illuminated. When the connected load is off, one
light level LED will be illuminated showing the preset light level.
Caution:
To avoid overheating and possible damage to other equipment, do not use to control receptacles or motor-
driven appliances.
Important Notes
1. Do not mix different load types on the same dimmer.
2. Do not use with fluorescent ballasts other than those listed.
3. For 3-way/multi-way installations, the Touch Remote (TDR) must be used in conjunction with the TDA-603. The
TDA-603 is not compatible with standard 3-way/4-way switches.
4. For multi-way installations, do not exceed 200 ft. of traveler wire between all the devices.
5. It is normal for the dimmer to feel warm to the touch during operation.
6. Protect the dimmer from dust and dirt when painting and spackling.
Derating
No derating is required for up to 4 devices ganged together. When 5 or more devices are ganged together it is
necessary to derate all devices to 500W, regardless of the type of load that is being controlled.
INSTALLATION AND WIRING
WARNING
Disconnect power to the wall switch box by turning OFF
the circuit breaker or removing the fuse from the circuit before
installing the TDA-603, replacing lamps, or doing any electrical work.
For ease of installation, manufacturer recommends use of a deep wall box.
1. Prepare the switch box
After the power is turned OFF at the circuit breaker box, remove the existing wall
plate and mounting screws. Pull the old switch out from the wall box.
2. Identify the type of circuit
You may connect the TDA-603 to a single pole or multi-way circuit. If you are unable
to clearly identify some or all of the wires mentioned in this manual, you should
consult with a qualified electrician.
In a 3-way circuit (Fig.3) two traveler wires connect to both switches. Another wire
provides power from the circuit box to one of the switches. A wire connects from one
switch to the load. A ground wire may also be connected to a ground terminal on the old
switches.

Caution
– For your safety: Connecting a proper ground wire to the dimmer provides protection against
electrical shock in the event of certain fault conditions. If a proper ground is not available, consult with a
qualified electrician before continuing installation.
3. Prepare the Wires
Tag the wires currently connected to the existing switch so that they can be identified
later. Disconnect the wires. Make sure the insulation is stripped off of the wires to
expose their copper cores to the length indicated by the “Strip Gage” in Fig. 4. (approx.
½ inch)
4. Wire the dimmer
4a. Single Pole Circuit: Wiring one TDA-603 (Fig. 5)
• Connect the green or non-insulated (copper) GROUND wire from the circuit to the green wire on the
dimmer.
• Connect the power wire from the circuit (HOT) to the black wire on the dimmer.
• Connect the neutral wire to the white wire on the dimmer.
• Connect the lamp power (LOAD) to the red wire on the dimmer.
• The yellow wire is not used in single pole applications.
4b. 3-way/multi-way wiring (Fig. 6)
Note: In a 3-way/multi-way circuit the TDA-603 must be used in conjunction with the TDR (Touch Remote).
The TDA-603 does not work if used in conjunction with standard 3-way/4-way switches.
Note: The dimmer can go in either location.
• Connect the green or non-insulated copper GROUND wire from the circuit to the green wire on the dimmer.
• Connect the power wire from the circuit (HOT) to the black wire on the dimmer.
• Connect the neutral wire to the white wire on the dimmer.
• Connect the lamp power (load) to the red wire on the dimmer.
• Connect the yellow traveller wire on the dimmer to the remote dimmer.
• Connect the green or non-insulated (copper) GROUND wire from the circuit to the green wire on the Touch
Remote. The TDR requires a ground. Be sure to verify the ground connection.
• Do not exceed 200ft of traveler wire between the devices.
