Highway Option
Electric brakes are electrically driven, with electromagnet actuators. and are dependant on an electrical
signal from the tow vehicle. With electric brakes, the driver can adjust the amount of braking on the trailer
by using the brake controller mounted in the tow vehicle.
The brake controller is an additional part and must be installed in the tow vehicle for electric trailer brakes
to work. The brake controller receives a signal when the tow vehicle is slowing down and puts on the trailer
brakes. This type of braking system also works when backing up the trailer.
DO NOT use your tow vehicle or trailer brakes alone to stop both vehicle and load. Your brake controller
must be set up according to the manufacturer’s recommendations to ensure proper synchronization
between the tow vehicle and the trailer. Additionally, you may have to make small adjustments occasionally
to accommodate changing loads and driving conditions.
Proper synchronization of tow vehicle to trailer braking can only be accomplished by road testing. Brake
lockup and sensitivity is quite often due to the lack of synchronization between the tow vehicle and the trailer
being towed, (too high of a threshold voltage (over 2 volts), or under adjusted brakes).
Before any synchronization adjustments are made,
your trailer brakes should be burnished-in by applying
the brakes 20-30 times with approximately a 32 km/h
(20 mph) decrease in speed, e.g. 65 km/h. to 33 km/h.
(40 mph to 20 mph) Allow ample time for brakes to cool
between application. This allows the brake shoes and
magnets to slightly “wear-in" to the drum surfaces.
