OPERATING MANUAL
EDITION 05/2010
PART NO. DOC387841
Water-dilutable paints such as are in principle divided into 3 groups:
Green
Non-fl ammable (non-combustible) paints
Yellow
Paints with low fl ammability
Red
Flammable
paints
Non-fl ammable:
Paints in this group have the following composition:
Gew. % H
2
O >
1.70 x Gew. % LM
+
0.96 x Gew. % ORG
Where:
Gew. %
Weight percent
H
2
O Water
LM
Liquid organic phase (solvent mainly consisting of higher ethylene glycol esters)
ORG
Solid organic phase (solids mainly consisting of binding agents and pigments)
Such paints behave like water in respect of fl ammability in liquid form (liquid phase) and in sprayed form.
Cleaners and thinners must also be non-fl ammable. A possible cleaner and thinner is, e.g. water with less than
35 weight percent 1:1 butylene glycol/N-propanol.
Paints in this group are categorized as non-fl ammable liquid coating materials.
When using non-fl ammable spray materials, the requirements of EN 50348 (mainly protection against contact)
must be complied with.
Low fl ammability:
Paints in this group have the following composition:
Gew. % H
2
O >
1.50 x Gew. % LM
+
0.49 x Gew. % ORG
Spray clouds of these paints cannot be ignited by sparks with an energy < 4 J. Explosion protection in the spray
area is not usually necessary if ignition sources with an energy of more than 2 J do not occur.
Paints in this group are categorized as diffi cult to ignite.
When using spray materials that are diffi cult to ignite, the requirements of EN 50176 must be complied with.
Flammable:
Paints that do not meet the criteria for non-fl ammable or diffi cult to ignite.
Paints in this group are categorized as fl ammable liquid coating materials.
When using fl ammable spray materials, the requirements of EN 50176 must be complied with.
Please contact your local WAGNER dealer and the paint manufacturer if you encounter application problems.
