1.1 Yielding heating energy from the ambient air
The energy contained in the ambient air can be used by advanced
DHW heat pumps to heat domestic water.
To transfer the energy to the heat pump, a fan draws the ambient air
over the evaporator of the heat pump. The high temperatures required
to heat the water are achieved through the heat pump process. The
condenser transfers the heating energy to the water.
1.2 Operating mode
The Vitocal 160-A can either be used to circulate or extract air. In cir-
culating mode only the latent energy in the air from the installation
room is used to heat the water. In extract mode the heat pump draws
the air through pipework, including air from other rooms.
Both types of the Vitocal 160-A (WWK and WWKS) are available for
circulating mode and for extract mode.
Type WWK (without solar facility)
The Vitocal 160-A, type WWK is specially designed for DHW heating without an external heat source (mono-mode or monoenergetic opera-
tion).

Circulating mode
Through the operation of the heat pump the air in the installation room
is cooled and the air humidity drops. The heating energy taken from
the room is supplied to the water. For DHW temperatures between
55 °C and 65 °C the electric immersion heater can be switched on.

Extract mode
In extract mode the Vitocal 160-A draws warm air from the WC, bath-
room, etc. via pipework and transfers the extracted heating energy to
the water. The extract air cooled in the heat pump is routed to the
outside via an air duct as expelled air. The electric immersion heater
is switched ON as in

.
To avoid negative pressure inside the building, a controlled amount of
fresh air must be supplied via separate ventilation elements. In this
mode the Vitocal 160-A can deliver controlled building ventilation
alongside DHW heating. The sizing of the pipework for extract and
expelled air is taken with reference to a domestic ventilation system.
