Mk.II Power Sharpening System
You invariably end up putting a small bevel on the inside
of the tool, but this is no problem since the outside
bevel can be reduced to compensate. When the knife
is purchased, the outside bevel is usually a bit too steep
anyway. Again, you are looking for an included angle
in the range of 15°, 20° maximum for harder woods
and heavy cuts. This is defi nitely one tool that you want
to use at the lowest possible included angle in order to
maximize your mechanical advantage.
Keeping Carving Tools Sharp
After doling out all this advice on how to sharpen
carving tools, it seems worthwhile to offer some advice
on how to avoid dulling them after you have them in the
shape you want.
Carving tools do not dull quickly unless:
• they are being forced unnaturally, either through
excessive mallet blows or because of prying action;
• they are being used carelessly or stored where they
can rattle together;
• they are being used on dirty wood;
• they are being used on wood of inconsistent texture.
Pin knots in spruce cause faster edge deterioration
than carving a hard, but consistently dense wood
like ebony.
Half the secret of having sharp tools that stay sharp is
in shaping the edges correctly; the other half is in not
dulling them through ignorance and carelessness.
