Mk.II Power Sharpening System
At the risk of being a bore, I would also say that if you
have not understood all of the material in this section
so far, you should re-read it. The principles explained
are of critical importance to effective sharpening of
carving gouges.
Rounding the Bevel
Unless you intend to use a gouge for long straight
grooves of a constant depth, you are probably going
to want some degree of roundness on the bevel.
Otherwise, you will have diffi culty changing your
depth of cut in the wood. That should probably be
rephrased; you will have no diffi culty continuing to cut
ever deeper if you have a fl at bevel, but you will fi nd
it diffi cult to level out or to cut out of the wood. Both
would require some prying with consequent damage to
the wood, the chisel or both. Using the example above
where we had 15° outside bevel and 10° inside bevel,
you might want to shape the outside bevel as shown in
the top drawing at right.
In this case, the outside bevel is more of a long,
gradual curve than a fl at bevel. You can be sure that
this will work better than a fl at bevel for most carving
requirements. The question for personal technique
becomes one of deciding the shape of curve you want.
You will also notice in the example that the 10° interior
bevel is much shorter than the 15° exterior bevel. This
is something you would adjust to your own wood, tools
and techniques. It is shown this way just to indicate that
the bevels do not have to be of equal length, because
any edge crumbling or rolling is going to take place
only at the tip of the gouge unless you are making very
heavy cuts or abusing the tool. Since it is far easier to
grind bevels on the outside of gouges than on the inside,
I prefer to keep the outside bevel long and the inside
bevel short wherever possible.
