Uniform speed
z
Hectic d riv ing significantly increases
noise a nd exhaust emissions.
z
Do not a ccelerate and brake
unnecessarily. Drive at uniform speed.
If you drive as often as possible in top
gear, and in urba n traffic w here possible
select fourth gear at sp eeds of 30 mph
(50 km/h) and above, and if you selec t
the next higher gear as soon a s possible,
only chang ing down when the engine is
no longer running perfectly smoothly,
you will reduce the noise im pact on the
environment ma ny times over.
Urban traffic
z
Freq uent driving off and stopping - for
exam ple a t traffic lig hts - g reatly
increases the noise level.
z
Av oid unnecessa ry stop s b y always
anticipa ting the driving conditions in
front.
If possible, selec t roa ds with a good
traffic flow.
Keep a safe dista nce from the vehicle in
front and av oid unnecessary brak ing
and acceleration.
Driv e considerately, esp ecially in
resid ential areas and particularly at
night.
High speed
z
At top speed you ca use exc essive noise.
As sp eed increases, so does tyre a nd
wind noise. In top gea r, tyre noise
determines the level of driving noise from
speeds as low as 45 mph (75 km /h). A
vehicle trav elling at 90 mph (150 km /h)
causes just a s m uc h noise as four
vehicles travelling at 30 m ph (50 km /h)
or ten vehicles trav elling at 45 mph
(70 k m/h).
z
Avoid trav elling at high speeds by
carefully planning your journeys.
Doors
z
Slam ming of doors creates noise.
z
Close doors quietly. Be considerate,
especially in residential areas and
particularly a t nig ht.
The first 600 miles/1000 km
z
Technically incorrect and uneconomical
driving will impa ir the performa nce of
your vehicle and shorten its service life.
z
Driv e your vehicle at various speed s,
making good use of all gears. Depress
the accelerator pedal a maxim um of
around three q uarters of the available
peda l travel. Do not use full throttle.
Do not drive faster than three quarters of
maxim um sp eed.
Never a llow the engine to labour at low
revs.
Further information - see page 50.
