longer light wavelengths in the UV-A and visible ranges for maximum penetration. These
longer wavelengths are also required for curing through more opaque or colored adhesives
and substrate materials to reduce the affect of attenuation. Shorter wavelengths in the UV-B
and UV-C regions have more energy and are effective for curing and removal of surface tack
for thin layers of coatings, inks and paints.
To allow the PortaRay curing system to adapt to these different types of curing applications,
multiple replacement lamp types are available which are optimized for each of the visible,
UVA and UVB wavelength ranges. See the Accessories list in section 9.2 for ordering part
numbers of the optional lamp types.
Refer to the chart below for the wavelength ranges of the ultraviolet and visible light curing
bands of the electromagnetic spectrum.

4.2 System Information
The PortaRay has a very high power density light output, which will result in rapid, high bond
strength cures. The unit utilizes a metal halide type arc lamp, which is powered by a tightly
regulated switch-mode power supply. This combination provides very consistent light output,
which results in very repeatable cure times.
The system is available in 400 or 600 Watt lamp power, allowing for the matching of output
power and heat levels to an application
’s curing requirements. Lamp reflectors are available
in either parabolic type for uniform flooding of large areas, or in a focused reflector type for
concentrating maximum intensity onto smaller spots. The light intensity can be controlled with
the top panel power level select switch, or by adjusting the distance of the lamp head to the
substrate being cured (larger distance results in lower light density and intensity).
Because the PortaRay is designed to be portable and extremely easy to transport and carry
between departments or to distant locations, the system is also available with an optional
accessories storage compartment that can be latched to the bottom of the lamp housing. This
storage box can be used to house curing system accessories such as the power cord,
headrest, UV safety glasses, gloves, adhesive syringes, etc., allowing for easier storing and
carrying of all system components in one small briefcase-like carrying unit.
