SELF TEST
A diagnostic feature in the printer. Without being connected to a computer, under
this mode the printer would print characters stored in the ROM.
SERIAL INTERFACE
Serial interface is also called as the communication port or the COM port. Normally
this interface is used for connecting a modem or a mouse. But a printer can also
be connected to this interface. This interface sends data to the printer one bit
at a time.
SHEET FEEDER
Cut sheet feeder is a mechanism which holds and feeds single sheets. This also
acts as paper seperator while using continuous sheets to prevent paper jams.
SUBSCRIPT
Characters that are printed in the lower part of the character space.
SUPERSCRIPT
Characters that are printed in the upper part of the character space.

TOP OF FORM
A setting that instructs the printer where the top of page is so that printing can
begin in the proper place. On receiving a from feed command it correctly advances
the page.
TRACTOR FEED
A method of putting continuous stationery using sprockets that positively engage
onto the holes in the paper and drive it.
TYPEFACE
A single type family of one design in all sizes and styles. Each typeface has many
fonts. Example: Helvetica is a typeface: Helvetica Light, Helvetica Medium, Helvetica
Bold, Helvetica Narrow are fonts belonging to the Helvetica Typeface family.
UNIDIRECTIONAL PRINTING
A printing mode where printing occurs only from left to right(i.e), only in one
direction. This allows for more precise vertical alignment than bi-directional printing,
especially for graphics output.
USER DEFINED CHARACTERS
Characters defined and stored in the printer’s RAM by the user. The user defined
characters can temporarily replace the bit patterns stored in the printer. User-
defined characters are also known as “Downloadable characters”. These character
patterns are lost when the printer is switched off.
