General aspects

The Tunze KOGAPUR Reverse Osmosis System features pre-filtration
and an advanced thin-film composite (TFC) membrane.
The average rejection rate is about 98%,  the recovery rate is abt. 25%
of the processed water.
To get the maximum of your KOGAPUR Reverse Osmosis System,
read this manual exactly, store in a good place for later questions.

Different models

The number of the model is about the daily production rate. It is based
on a water temperature of 25° Celsius and a water pressure of 4.1 bar.
Model 60

57l/24h

Model 90

95l/24h

Model 150

Connecting requirements

The system has to be used on potable water supply only. Do not
use with water which is microbiologically unsafe or water of
unknown quality.
Water pressure

3 bar - 7 bar

pH:

3 - 10

Feed Water:

potable water

(max. 0.3 mg Cl/l)

Max. turbidity:

1.0 n.t.u.

Max. total dissolved solids:

2,000 ppm

Max. total hardness:

30° dH

Max iron in water:

less than 0.1 ppm

If your total hardness is higher than 30 °dH, there are 3 possibilities:
(1)

Get the hardness of your feed water down

(ion exchanger).

(2) You change the recovery rate from abt. 25 % to abt. 15 % and use

more water, but you achieve a higher lifetime of the membrane.
If you want this to happen, please enquire with the manufacturer.

(3)

You risk a shorter lifetime of the membrane. Different kinds of

water with the same total hardness have different behaviours in the
reverse osmosis system. For example, water with a total hardness
of 35 °

dH may produce a lifetime of 3-4 years of the reverse

osmosis system, but in another water with 32° dH the lifetime may
only be about 12 month.

Mounting (Fig. 1)

(1) The System has to be mounted above a drainage

 to have a maximum

security against destruction by water.
(2) Remove the protective caps from the tubing.
(3) Attach hose bib coupling to cold water source.
(4) Place the yellow tubing in the drain. This water needs not to be
wasted. It is highly filtered without chlorine and only 15% higher in
hardness.
(5) Place the blue tubing in a storage container of your choice.

Operation

This unit has to be operated on cold water only. Hot water  (>40°C) will
destroy the thin film membrane. Before turning on the water, be sure that
it is cold!
Slowly turn on the cold water to full flow, check connections of the
system for leaks.
It is recommended that at least 10 L of purified water  (abt. 3-4
hours. operation) is discarded before using for aquarium or drink-
ing water.

Quality of the pure water

The quality of the pure water depends considerably on the composition
of the tap water. In addition, it is decisive whether the plant is operated
continuously or with interruptions. After an interruption of 1 to 2 days, the
originally pure water will still contain some tap water due to the osmotic
compensation in the membrane.
In case of continuous operation, tap water of 600µS&cm (abt. 20° dH)
may turn into pure water of abt. 20 µS/cm (< 1° dH). In discontinuous
operation, however, a value of abt. 40 µS (< 1.5° dH) may develop. For
the exact determination of your water quality (for your aquariums as
well) we recommend the TUNZE measuring instruments 7032 (fresh
water) and 7032M (fresh water and salt water).

Maintenance

For maximum contaminant removal and long membrane live, the
sediment and carbon pre-filters have to be changed at 6-month inter-
vals. If your water contains a great deal of sediment, the pre-filters might
have to be changed at more frequent intervals to maintain an adequate
production rate.

Changing the pre-filters

(1)

Close the water connection.

(2)

S Models: Remove the tubing connections of the pre-filter
housing by twisting by hand.
M / L Models: Unscrew the clear housing(s).

(3)

Discard the old filter(s).

(4)

Install the new filter(s).

(5)

Reattach the tubing connections to the new pre-filter housing
(M/L models - the clear housing). Make sure that the nuts are
screwed carefully back on.

(6)

Turn on the system and check for leaks.

Installing a new membrane

The KOGAPUR Reverse Osmosis System contains a thin film mem-
brane with a lifetime of 3 to 5 years. Should the membrane need
replacement (determined by checking the conductivity of the feed water
and the purified water and calculating the rejection), the following
procedure should be employed:
(1)

S / L-Models: Unscrew white tubing from the feed port of
membrane housing (3) and take the housing out of the clamps.
M  models: Unscrew the white tubing from the intake of the
membrane housing (3).

(2)

Unscrew the cap counterclockwise from the membrane hous-

ing.

(3)

With a pair of pliers, grasp the membrane stem and pull the
membrane from the housing.

(4)

Insert the new membrane into the housing, O-ringed end first.
The O-ringed tube has to fit into the recess at the bottom of the
membrane housing. When the membrane is aligned with the
hole, push membrane into hole until it bottoms out.

(5)

Replace module O-ring seal on the housing rim and careful
screw the cap back on tightly.

(6)

Snap membrane housing back in clamps and reconnect the
white tube (M models - the filter housing) to the feed port of
membrane housing.

(7)

Slowly turn on the cold water to full flow; check connections of
the system for leaks.

It is recommended that at least 10 L of purified water  (abt. 3-4
hours' operation) is discarded before using for aquarium or
drinking water.

Trouble shooting

Factors which affect the performance of your reverse osmosis water
system:
(1)

Water pressure: The higher the feed water pressure, the
greater the production of pure water (minimum/maximum
pressure).

(2)

Water temperature: Colder water results in lower pure water
production. (on 12°C ca. 30-40% less pure water)

(3)

Total Dissolved Solids (TDS): The higher the TDS, the lower
the production.

If the pure water production is too low, check the pre-filter(s), change
if necessary.

Storage

Storage means the system is not in operation.
It is recommended that you store your reverse osmosis system in a cool
place. If storing for a longer time (more than 3 weeks), please order a
storage fluid.
