INTRODUCTION
The ICO is designed to be safe for the user. The system uses
modern, refractory ceramic fiber (RCF) materials to provide
highly efficient insulation of the heated chambers. This material
is completely enclosed and should present no health risk to the
operator during normal use in accordance with this manual.
RCF can present a potential health hazard if the fibers become
airborne and thus become respiratory issues. Since, under
normal operating conditions, the design of the oven completely
encloses these materials, fibers should not become airborne
during normal use. Therefore, no special precautions are
necessary when using the oven to perform asphalt content
analysis.
Special precautions should be taken during maintenance
operations or other activities that involve removal of the system
sheet-metal covers.
These maintenance operations should be
performed only by authorized, experienced maintenance
personnel
. They include removal of the rear or top panels for
troubleshooting, cleaning, or making repairs.
During the performance of such maintenance operations,
observe the precautions set forth in the Material Safety Data
Sheets (MSDSs) enclosed with the product. Wear respirators
approved by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and
Health (NIOSH) to prevent possible inhalation of airborne
ceramic fibers. Wear gloves and long sleeve clothing to prevent
irritation of the skin. Wear safety goggles to prevent irritation of
the eyes. Unplug the oven from its power source before
performing any maintenance operations.
All maintenance operations should be performed with special
effort to minimize generating airborne fiber dust. Do not use
compressed air to clean and do not rub or wipe ceramic fiber
surfaces. Although no periodic cleaning of ceramic fiber surfaces
is required, it is best to use a vacuum cleaner equipped with a
high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter system to remove
any debris from the surfaces of the ceramic fiber, if desired. This
