On- and Off-Axis Distance
Due to the proximity effect, directional mics achieve their stipulated polar pattern for low frequencies
at a single distance. This can result in substantial coloration of the mic
’
s off-axis response.

ON DIST
is the distance to the source being recorded.
•
OFF DIST
is the approximate distance to background sound sources you wish to minimize, such as
instrument bleed or room reflections.
Each parameter
’
s range is 1 cm to infinity.
On- and Off-Axis Distance Auto
When set to
AUTO
, the
ON DIST
and
OFF DIST
controls are disabled from manual control but automati-
cally correct the low frequency response. However, this tends to yield a less than ideal polar response,
so usually we recommend setting it to
OFF
.
TIP:
AUTO
can work well when the source is moving, or there are multiple sources at different distances.
Output
Output Level
This lets you cut/boost the master output level up to 12 dB.
Output Phase
This lets you reverse the phase of the output, which can be useful when using multiple mics with
different wiring polarities or time alignments.
Reverse
This parameter lets you switch the mic outputs so it points backwards. When using the Sphere 180
plug-in, this control swaps the left and right outputs.
Import
Click the arrow icon under
IMPORT
to import a Sphere preset. This allows users to share Sphere presets
between different DAWs.
Input/Output Meter
Click the meter to toggle between displaying the input and the output levels.
