Figure 4-3 (left) compares the Sphere L22 capsule alignment to a Neumann U67/U87. The crossed
dashed lines show the center position of the capsules. As you can see, aligning the mic bodies signifi-
cantly misaligns the capsules. Figure 4-3 (right) shows the capsule alignment compared to an AKG
C414 XLS.

s important to remember that the capsule must be aligned in all three dimensions, as well as rota-
tionally. Townsend Labs uses multiple self-leveling alignment lasers to ensure mic alignment. When
exact positioning is the goal, we recommend using the hard-mount instead of the shock-mount, to
keep the mic from moving.
Figure 4-4 shows a close-up view of the Sphere L22 from the front and side, so you can easily see
where to align the microphone.
