Signal Drifts with Time

The usual cause of signal drift is deposition of matrix on the sample and
skimmer cones. As material builds up, the sampling and skimmer
orifices become smaller, and the total ion beam is reduced. Removal and
cleaning of the cones will resolve this problem, see

“Maintaining the

The log view in the Experiment Editor is most useful. It is
recommended to check the previous days log and to make sure that
none of the instrument parameters has significantly changed.

To check for an instrumental drift

1. Ensure that the total dissolved solids level of the solution being

aspirated is below the recommended levels.

2. Check that the laboratory temperature is stable.

3. Check that the temperature of the cooling water supplied to the

instrument is stable.

4. Make sure that the cooling water lines at the Peltier cooler are

securely connected.

5. Make sure that the pump speed of the Peristaltic pump is stable.

6. Make sure that the vacuum system is stable.

7. Make sure that the tubings of the peristaltic pump are not damaged

or clogged.

8. Make sure that the nebulizer is not damaged or blocked.

9. Make sure that the nebulizer tubing is not damaged or clogged.

10. Make sure that the spray chamber is not damaged.

11. Make sure that the plasma torch is in good condition with no

cracked or melted areas.

12. Make sure the torch body is aligned correctly inside the torch

holder, see

“Maintaining the Torch”

13. Make sure that the waste tubing is inserted in the vessel and the

vessel is empty.

14. Check that the tension on the peristaltic pump tubing is correct and

that the pump tubing is in good condition.

If none of the above shows any improvements on the signal, contact
the Qtegra Administrator for further troubleshooting.
