4 The TG234 wireless access point
DMS3-CTC-25-221 v1.0
4.4 Securing your wireless connection
Introduction
You can protect the wireless communication between your devices with a wireless key. This means that:
Only clients that use the correct Network Name (SSID) and wireless key can connect to your network.
All data passing through your wireless access point is secured and encrypted.
Encryption types
Over the years a number of encryption types have been developed. The TG234 uses different encryption types based on
WPA and WPA2.
Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) is an improved security standard for wireless networks that provides strong data protection
and network access control. It provides strong data protection by using encryption, as well as strong access controls and
802.1X based user authentication.
Wi-Fi Protected Access 2 (WPA2), the follow on security method to WPA for wireless networks that provides stronger data
protection and network access control. It provides enterprise and consumer Wi-Fi users with a high level of assurance that
only authorized users can access their wireless networks.
The list below gives you an overview of the supported encryption types ordered by descending security level; you will find
the highest level of security at the top of the list:
WPA2-AES
:
The most recent and most secure version of WPA. Choose this encryption type if your 5 GHz wireless gateway supports
WPA2.
WPA+WPA2
:
This is a mixed mode. In this mode WPA2 is the preferred encryption type, but wireless clients do not support WPA2 can
still use WPA as encryption type. Choose this option if not all of your wireless clients support WPA2, or if you are not
sure. Wireless clients that support WPA2 will use WPA2, the others will use WPA.
NONE-OPEN
:
If you choose this type no encryption will be used.
Procedure
Proceed as follows:
1
Open the TG234 GUI.
For more information, see
Configure the TG234 via its GUI
2
On the
Config
menu, click
Wireless
.
3
In the
Encryption
box, select the encryption type you want to apply.
4
Click
Save
.
5
Configure the other TG234s and your MediaAccess Xtream Gateway (if applicable) with the same security settings.
6
Reconnect your wireless devices. For more information, see
“4.1 Connecting via WPS” on page 37
or
“4.3 Connecting
manually without WPS” on page 42
.
7
Optionally, you can use the MAC address list to indicate which devices are allowed to connect to your TG234. For more
information, see
“3.1.5 The MAC address list” on page 27
.
Although the TG234 allows you to use no encryption (
NONE-OPEN
), we strongly advise against using it! Use
WPA2-AES
or
WPA+WPA2
instead.
