The relevant TCO’95 requirement: Neither CFCs nor HCFCs
may be used during the manufacturing of the prod uct or its
packaging.

)
Bio-accumulative is defined as substances which accumulate
within living organisms
2)
Lead, C admium and Mercury are heavy metals which are B io-
accumulative.
Cadmium
2)
Cadmium is p resent in rechargeab le b atteries and in the
colo urgenerating layers of certain co mp uter d isplays.
Cadmium damages the nervous system and is toxic in high
doses.
TCO’95 requirement states that batteries may not contain
more than 25 ppm (parts per million) of cadmium. The colour-
generating layers of disp lay screens must not contain any
cadmium.
Mercury
2)
Mercury is sometimes found in batteries, relays and switches.
Mercury damages the nervous system and is toxic in high
doses.
TCO’95 requirement states that batteries may not co ntain
mo re than 25 p pm (parts per millio n) o f mercury. It also
demands that no mercury is present in any of the electrical or
electro nics components concerned with the display unit.
CFCs (freons)
CFCs (freo ns) are sometimes used for washing printed circuit
bo ards and in the manufacturing o f exp anded fo am for
packaging. CFCs break down ozone and thereby damage the
ozone layer in the stratosphere, causing increased reception
on E arth of ultraviolet light with co nsequent increased risks
of skin cancer (malignant melanoma).
