Congratulations! Yo u have just purchased a T CO’95
approved and labelled product! Your choice has provided
yo u with a p rod uct developed fo r p rofessional use. Yo ur
purchase has also contributed to reducing the burden on the
enviro nment and also , to the further d evelo p ment o f
environmentally adapted electronics p roducts.
Why do we have environmentally labelled computers?
In many countries, environmental lab elling has become
an estab lished method fo r encouraging the adaptation of
goods and services to the environment. The main p roblem,
as far as comp uters and other electronics eq uip ment are
concerned, is that environmentally harmful substances are
used bo th in the p rod ucts and during the manufacturing.
Since it has not been possible for the majo rity of electronics
equipment to be recycled in a satisfactory way, most of these
potentially damaging substances sooner or later enter Nature.
There are also other characteristics of a computer, such
as energy consumptio n levels, that are important from the
viewpoints of both the work (internal) and natural (external)
enviro nments. Since all metho ds of conventional electricity
generation have a negative effect on the environment (acidic
and climate-influencing emissions, radioactive waste, etc.),
it is vital to conserve energy. Electronics equipment in offices
consume an enormous amount of energy since they are often
left running continuously.
What does labelling involve?
This p ro duct meets the req uirements fo r the TCO’95
scheme which provides for international and environmental
labelling of perso nal computers. The labelling scheme was
d evelo p ed as a joint effort b y the T CO (T he Swed ish
C o n f e d e r a ti o n o f P r o f e s s i o n a l E m p l o y e e s ) .
Naturskyd dsforeningen (T he Swed ish Society for Nature
Conservation ) and NUTEK (The National Board for Industrial
and Technical Development in Sweden).
T he req uirements co ver a wid e range o f issues:
environment, ergonomics, usab ility, emission of electrical
and magnetic field s, energy consumption and electrical and
fire safety.
The environmental demands concern restrictions on the
p resence and use o f heavy metals, b ro minated and
chlorinated flame retardants, CfCs (freons) and chlorinated
solvents, among other things, The product must be prepared
fo r recycling and the manufacturer is ob liged to have an
environmental plan which must be adhered to in each country
where the company implements its operational policy.
The energy req uirements includ e a demand that the
computer and/or display, after a certain period of inactivity,
shall reduce its p ower co nsumptio n to a lower level in one
or more stages. The length of time to reactivate the computer
shall be reasonable for the user.
Lab elled pro ducts must meet strict enviro nmental
demands, for example, in respect of the reduction of electric
and magnetic fields, physical and visual ergo nomics and
good usability.
