Environmental equirements
Brominated flame retardants
Brominated flame retardants are p resent in printed circuit
boards, cables, wires, casings and housings. In turn, they delay
the spread of fire. Up to thirty percent of the p lastic in a
computer casing can co nsist of flame retardant sub stances.
These are related to another group of enviro nmental to xins,
P CBs, which are suspected to give rise to similar harm,
includ ing repro ductive d amage in fisheating birds and
mammals, due to the b io-accumulative
1)
p rocesses. Flame
retardants have been found in human blood and researchers
fear that disturb ances in fo etus development may occur.
TCO’95 demand requires that plastic components weighing
mo re than 25 grams must not contain o rganically b ound
chlorine and bromine.
Lead
2)
Lead can b e found in picture tubes, d isplay screens, solders
and cap acitors. Lead damages the nervo us system and in
higher doses, causes lead poiso ning.
TCO’95 requirement permits the inclusion of lead since no
replacement has yet been d eveloped.
