* What is Sausage Processing?
In broadcast circles, a certain term has emerged
in recent years:
Sausage Processing. Sausage
Processing is the result of compressing the dy-
namics out of the program material regardless
of genre (news, commercials, movies, game
shows, etc.). This results in programs that have
been squeezed through the same “sausage-
making machine” to be equally loud – but also to
sound equally bad.
aNorm: Adaptive and Normalizing
aNorm is actually a revolution in streaming pro-
cessing in several ways. aNorm keeps dynamic
changes to a minimum by normalizing intelligent-
ly first. Only if normalization by itself isn’t enough
to hit the Target Loudness and the Target Loud-
ness Range, aNorm applies dynamic processing
as well. Furthermore, normalization as well as
dynamic processing is predictive and adaptive
in several dimensions.
From now on, transmission processing doesn’t
have to destroy delicate balances achieved in
production just to hit a number such as -23 or
-24. Instead, aNorm easily and transparently
makes the best of any platform served.
The more you take advantage of aNorm’s innate
intelligence by marking already normalized pro-
grams and marking program transitions, the less
processing is required – and the better your au-
dio will sound.
Remote Control of aNorm
Processing features
Several aNorm functions are best taken ad-
vantage of by signaling paramount information
about the audio (metadata) to DB6. This is pos-
sible using an extended GPI scheme, via Ether-
net and via SDI SMPTE 2020 metadata.
