This section is one section of a complete service

manual. Before starting any procedure, read all

warnings and instructions that are located in the

Service Guidelines chapter.

WARNING

REAR DRUM BRAKE

Auto-Adjust Brake Mechanism
Theory of Operation

The auto-adjust mechanism is located on the bottom of

the brake assembly. As the brake pad material wears

down, the distance the brake shoes travel to engage the

brake drum becomes longer. When the travel becomes

long enough, the brake lever engages the auto-adjust

lever and causes it to index a tooth on the star wheel

adjuster. This rotates the adjuster, which decreases the

travel needed for the brake shoes to engage the brake

drum.

Note: The auto adjust brakes cannot be manually

adjusted.

Note: The symptom of a low brake pedal may

indicate that the auto adjuster is not working

or the brake cable is not adjusted properly.

Remove the vehicle from service and repair

the brakes.

Note: The brake adjustment is inside of the left

and right brake. Do not adjust the brake by

means of the brake cables as this will cause

malfunction of the brakes. If you hear a

single “clunking” noise while braking it may

be due to incorrect adjustment of the brake

cables or linkage.

Inspecting the Auto-Adjust Brake Mechanism

1: Raise the rear of the vehicle and support with

jack stands.

2: Remove the brake drum.

3: Release the park brake.

4: Back off the auto adjuster star wheel one or two

turns.

5: Reinstall the brake drum and press the bake

pedal.

6: As the brake pedal is pressed, the auto adjuster

should rotate the star wheel. You should hear

a ‘click’ each time the pedal is pressed until the

adjustment is complete. Reconnect the main

positive and negative at the batteries.

7: Remove the blocks from behind the wheels.

8: Test drive the vehicle
