BATTERY
The battery must be periodically checked for the correct electrolyte level and for
corrosion on the terminals.
WARNING
Keep all open flames and sparks away from the battery! During
normal operation, batteries generate dangerous explosive gases
that may explode if exposed to open flames or sparks.
Battery electrolyte is caustic and will cause chemical burns
and damage to vehicle surfaces. Wear a protective faceshield/
clothing and use care when working with the battery or have a
skilled automotive technician perform work with the battery.
Always repair charging and electrical system problems
immediately or the battery will become damaged and require
replacement.

Corrosion
If corrosion (white or greenish powder) is present on the battery terminals, use
the following procedure to clean them:
Wear a protective faceshield, gloves and clothing.
Disconnect the negative (-) and then positive (+) leads, 1, from the battery
using a wrench.
Coat the terminals with a solution of water and baking soda or commercially
available battery cleaning solution. Allow the solution to foam.
When the bubbling stops (the powder will turn brownish), clean the
terminals with fresh water.
Brush the terminals with a wire brush.
Coat the terminals with petroleum jelly to prevent further corrosion. Do
not use grease.
